After completing medical training at the University of Colorado, Dr. Joyner moved to Florida to fulfill his National Health Service Corp contract providing care for HIV-infected immigrants and indigent patients. He then returned to Colorado to work at Denver Public Health in the clinical areas of HIV, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. These many years of public health service cemented his interest in infectious diseases and HIV care, which eventually led to a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
